Traffic Accident With Tanker Truck on I-5 Causes Minor Injuries
A traffic collision involving a tanker truck and SUV resulted in minor injuries in Sacramento on November 28. The collision occurred on northbound Interstate 5 just north of the 43rd Avenue on-ramp in the South Land Park area around 11:21 a.m. Officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the number three lane was blocked by the collision and debris was scattered in the slow lane. Minor injuries were reported in the crash, which is under investigation by the CHP to determine the cause and to assign fault.
Dangers of a Collision Involving a Tanker Truck
Big trucks are an important part of modern transportation, carrying various liquids and gasses from one destination to another. However, due to their size and dangerous contents, collisions involving tankers can be especially hazardous. Tankers carry many flammable substances – meaning if a collision occurs, the potential for extreme fire damage and risk of explosion is high.
A Tanker Truck Collision Can Cause Dangerous Spills
The impact of a collision may cause these materials to leak or spill onto the roadway, increasing environmental risks by contaminating water supplies or soil in the area. In addition to this damage caused by spilled materials, fumes released into the air can also cause health hazards, including sickness or death among nearby individuals and wildlife.
Dangerous Substances Transported by a Big Truck
Big rigs transport a variety of dangerous substances, including chemicals, fuel and oil. Some of the most common hazardous materials that are transported by tanker trucks include:
- Petroleum products like gas, diesel, motor oils and other fuels
- Corrosives such as sulfuric and hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide
- Flammable liquids such as gasoline, kerosene and propane
- Toxic chemicals, including pesticides, herbicides and industrial solvents
- Peroxide-forming liquids such as benzene and acetone
- Explosives like ammonium nitrate, dynamite and gunpowder
- Compressed gasses like oxygen and methane
- Radioactive materials such as uranium and plutonium
- Biohazards, including infectious medical waste
- Industrial waste products such as contaminated soil, sludge or wastewater
Recovering Compensation After an Accident
If you have been injured in an accident with a tanker truck, then you may be eligible for compensation. An experienced personal injury lawyer can help you determine if the driver was at fault and how to pursue your legal rights best. If a third party is found to be at fault, such as the truck owner or manufacturer, then your attorney may pursue compensation from them instead.
Other Ways Your Lawyer Helps
